Community: Confessions

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

James 5:16

Although confessions may be awkward and difficult, this ancient practice is essential for healing sin and shame. By naming wickedness and woundedness (either something we have done or something others have done to us or even around us), we can start walking on the road to wholeness with a loving community.

However, as a community, we need to reflect on how to create a wholesome and supportive environment for people to be able to open up and share. Challenges include the fear of being judged or gossiped about. We need to be intentional about loving people just as they come and just as they are, in order for people to feel safe enough to share and confess.

Confessions also require a willingness to let the Holy Spirit convict us of our sin, to repent and initiate change in our lives. Head knowledge alone is often inadequate and a real heart change is needed to make the difference. Sharing our struggles may also help us to find support in community, ask for prayer and encouragement, and to know that we are not alone.
